Why Is the Sixth Month Called June?

june, letterpress

For students and teachers alike, June is often their favorite month. School’s out and the days are long. But where did the first month of summer get its name? In Old English, this month was often referred to as simply “midsummer month.” It also may have been called “sere-month,” meaning “dry and withered,” though this term may have meant June, July or August.

In the seventeenth century, the Latin name for the sixth month crept into English, Iūnius, meaning “sacred to Juno,” the Roman goddess. At this point in history, the capital forms of J and I were not yet distinguished from one another.

Juno is the Roman counterpart to the Greek goddess Hera. In Roman myth, she is the patron goddess of Rome. She is shown alternately as a cruel goddess (in Virgil’s Aeneid) and the goddess of marriage and childbirth. In fact, summer weddings are still very popular, and they may have started because of the blessing that this goddess bestowed on those wed in her sacred month.

(Why is May also a verb? Find out here.)

In the United States, the name June skyrocketed in popularity in the early twentieth century. In 1925, it was the 39th most popular name for a baby girl, as favored as Sarah and Allison are today. The name fell out of popularity through the rest of the century, but it has recently been back in vogue.

Is June your favorite month? What other months are you curious about?

Dude, Juno/Hera needs to grow up, she literally burned my pancakes this morning! I mean, why the pancakes man? Wanna know why? Because Annabeth and I were talking about how much she was a butt…

For those asking about other months names.

The first Roman Calendar was established by Romulus and later refined by Numa Pompilius. It consisted in 12 months, beginnig in March. It was reformed later by Julius Caesar (Julian Calendar) and then refined by Augustus, and used in Europe until the advent of the Gregorian Calendar in 1582.

Martius: first month of spring, named after Mars, god of War, because usually with the good weather the military actions were developed.

Aprilis: named after Venus, or Aphrodite, from Greek “afros”, foam.

Maius: named after Bona Dea, Maia or Fauna, godess of fertility, chastity and health.

Iunius: named after Iuno or Juno, godess member of the Capitoline Triad, and married to Jupiter.

Quintilis: from “quinque”, 5th month of the year, renamed in honor of Julius Caesar after his death in 44 BC.

Sextilis; from “sex”, 6th month of the year; renamed in honor of the first Roman Emperor, Augustus, in 8 BC.

September: from “septem”, 7th month of the year.

October: from “octo”, 8th month of the year

November: from “novem”, 9th month of the year

December: from “decem”, 10th month of the year

Januarius: named after Janus, god of portals and doors.

Februarius: named after Februa, the Roman festival of purification by water and rain. Later the festival named the god of purification, Februus.

Given the Romans tended to borrow a lot of ideas from the Greeks do you know whether the Greeks had a calendar? Similarly, given the Greeks borrowed a lot of their ideas from the Egyptians did the Egyptians not have a calendar that you could tell me a little bit about?

They don’t long for students and teachers. The first sentence is about teachers’ and students’ fondness of June because it’s generally the end of school, and the next sentence just states that the days are long, because June holds the longest day in terms of hours the sun is up.

August was named after Augustus Caesar, and July after Julius Caesar.

They are also why September, October, November and December (7th, 8th, 9th and 10th by name) are the 9th-12th months.

March 1 used to be the first of the year. Therefore, Sept Oct Nov and Dec were months 7 through 10 as Sept through Dec meant numbers 7 through 10. Feb is 28 days since is was the last month and Emperors that had months with 30 days were jealous of the 31 day months Emperors so they took a day from the end of the year which was February to get their 31st day.

September through December are named after the Latin ordinal numbers: September = seventh month; October = eighth; etc. Odd since they are the ninth through twelfth months. My understanding is that until the 1600 or 1700s the first month was March, so September would be seventh.

The month was named after Mars, the god of war, as was the planet, of course. See Lee’s response below too about “martial”. It’s another “march” from another source that became the word referring to the action of walking in a certain way.

September, October, November and December come from prefixes. Septe means Seven. Octo means Eight. Nove means Nine. Deca means Ten. Those were the seventh, eight, ninth and tenth months, respectively. Well, they were until Augustus Cesar decided that he and Julius Cesar should have months named after them. Thus, he inserted July and August (named after Julius and Augustus, respectively) into the middle of the calendar. This moved September (the seventh month) to the ninth month, October, the eighth month to the tenth month, November, the ninth month to the eleventh month and December, the tenth month to the twelfth month making the origin of their names more difficult to discern.

June is by far my favorite month because of the significance it has in my life! My husband (now of nearly 30 years) and I got married on his birthday, so with that and Father’s Day all in the same month, it is very festive for us and gives us so much to celebrate! Mixed with the beautiful Summer sunshine in the Sunshine State, we are very happy love birds and look forward to this time of celebration of love every year!

I don’t care what anyone says. I think you’re really brave for marrying your father. True love is hard to find and you have to grab it when you see it and never let go, despite the genetic consequences to your offspring.

Being a Shawn my name is sometimes used with girls. A good alternative to Shawn for the girl side of things is April, but this is the month of June so I will speak of that. Many of the girls in school who were named June, were born in 75, 76, and 77. Looking back on it now, I realize their parents may have been influenced by the “Jetsons” cartoon. It fits with the time frame, all the little girls and boys who watched the Jetsons in the mid 60′s were just getting married and having little girls and boys of their own.

I’m pregnant with a little girl. I’m also a freelance writer. (I’ve been married for a year.) I guess you can imagine how I found this; I’m looking for names for the baby, and I’m also maintaining my work.
Well, the baby’s due in June 2015. The weeks are coming closer. I’m a little more than eight months pregnant.
I’m thinking of names like, Summer, Ava, Juliet & Sophie. My husband basically goes with anything. Any suggestions…time is running out!

    • Ann -  June 5, 2015 - 9:40 am

I wouldn’t go with Sophie … it’s over used right now. I prefer the old fashioned names like Nora, Louise, Alice, Anna, Margaret and Emma. Also, many couples are naming their children with names that are gender-neutral and a bit odd, like Taylor, Berkley, Macy, etc.
My two daughters are Alice Louise and Natalie Rose. Good luck and enjoy your blessing!

How lucky your daughter is! She has a choice of so many lovely names.

Besides the ones already mentioned, you have the birthstone to consider. It’s the PEARL, or the Alexandrite which can give you ALEXANDRA or ALEXA.

The flower of June is the ROSE but also the Morning Glory which can give you DAWN or AURORA for morning and GLORIA for you-know-what.

I wish you great happiness with your new treasure.

I think Summer is a really sweet and lovely name. I guess my suggestions would be Amber, Fiona, and Leala because their my friends’ names and they’re also good names. It’s obviously up to you and your husband and good luck and congratulations on starting your own family.

They made really nice orange flavored beverages. Hence the name “Orange Julius” that was their specialty drink. It made for a sweet relief in the month of June for me.

Well, May 27 is my older brother Ron’s birthday and June 7th is mine. We always celebrated in June. We did that for 39 years. Six months before our birthdays (his 41st, my 40th), Ron died from cancer. June will always hold a special place in my heart, not necessarily for my birthday, but because of the fond memories that I had celebrating with my best friend in the whole wide world

I was named June because my mother’s best friend in college was named June but I was born in December. I didn’t like the name when I was a child and demanded they called me Jane for awhile. But since then, I’ve grown to like it more. It definiately fell out of vogue for quite some time but I found it very interesting in the article where it said it was coming back into favor.

It is a glorious time of year! June is the time for new beginnings ~ and a wonderful time to begin new ventures. In the springtime, all things are made new… and transitioning in any area of Life are most readily accomplished. Some say that June marks summer, but here in Minnesota the month actually felt more like June-uary at it’s start.
All the birds are lovey-dovey at this time of year. It is amazing and also lots of fun to witness their interactions with one another. We were able to see Mama Robin entice her 4 children from their nest with a beak full of angleworms. It bears witness to the hand of God, all the wonders of June! When we saw those babies fledge, I couldn’t help but be humbled
by the glory of it all. Tears of wonderment flowed down my cheeks and I said to my spouse, “I’m rich!” The wealthiest man in the world can’t buy you a moment like that one… but He gives them freely to those who have eyes to see.

When you ask why September isn’t the seventh month- because of Sept-ember, which means seven (same with October- Octo means eight) it’s beacause in the Roman calendar, March was the first month. That way September is seventh.

My reply is to Mr. Bob Bobson….
Long back ago, there were only 10 months in a year.
    1. January
    2. February
    3. March
    4. April
    5. May
    6. June
    7. September
    8. October
    9. November and
    10.December

Then July came. This month was given the name of Julius Ceaser
and then August came. This was dedicated to Roman King Augustus.
But before July and August September was seventh, October was Eighth, November was Ninth and December was tenth moth of the year as the name shows.

Tuesday is also a feminine name, although rarely used except in show business. There was a character named Tuesday Warner in a New Zealand soap opera “Shortand Street,” and there is an American actress named Tuesday Weld. We used to joke that if she had married actor Hal March III, her name would be “Tuesday March the Third.”

    To Bob Bobson,
September used to be the seventh month.
Around the time of Julius Caesar, however, it was decided to add two additional months to the roman calendar. These months were named to honour the ruler, Julius Augustus Caesar: July and August.
Thus, September was pushed into the position of ninth month in the calendar.
